The symposium is being held in partnership with three of the 54 water institutes in the United
States - specifically, the institutes in Virginia, West Virginia, and Kentucky. These institutes were established under Public Law 88-379, the Water Research Act of 1964. The intent of the program then and now is summarized in the Act as follows:
To assist in assuring the Nation at all times of a supply of water sufficient in quantity and quality to meet the requirements of its expanding population, it is the purpose of the Congress, by this Act, to stimulate, sponsor, provide for, and supplement present programs for the conduct of research, investigations, experiments, and training of scientists in the fields of water and of resources which affect water.
Virginia Water Resources Research Center
The Virginia Water Resources Research Center (Water Center) was established at Virginia Tech in 1965 by the U.S. Congress. In 1982, the Water Center was authorized by the Virginia General Assembly as a state agency. We take pride in our continued efforts to offer funding to outstanding undergraduate and graduate students attending Virginia’s colleges and universities. We support meaningful water research and are dedicated to interdisciplinary research and educational projects. The Water Center also acts as an information resource for interested citizens, water specialists and professionals. We produce a quarterly newsletter about water issues important to Virginia's citizens, along with research bulletins, reports and other publications.
West Virginia Water Research Institute
The West Virginia Water Research Institute (WVWRI) at West Virginia University has been in existence since 1967 and has served as a statewide vehicle for performing research related to water issues. WVWRI is the premier water research center in West Virginia and, within selected fields, an international leader. WVWRI serves as the coordinating body for the following programs: the National Mine Land Reclamation Center, Appalachian Clean Streams Initiative, Acid Drainage Technology Initiative, Combustion Byproducts Recycling Consortium, National Environmental Education Training Center, State Water Institutes, Geo-Technical Center, West Virginia Water Gaging Council, Northern West Virginia Brownfields Assistance Center, and Hydrology Research Center.
Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute
The Kentucky Water Resources Research Institute at the University of Kentucky was established in 1964. The institute has developed new thrusts in environmental systems graduate education, undergraduate and graduate scholarships, and continuing education. It has developed strong ties to the Kentucky Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet. Since its inception, the institute has sponsored short courses and conferences, supported hundreds of students in many departments and colleges, and produced numerous research reports. Many journal articles have been published by faculty and research staff associated with the institute. In 2011, the KWRRI was recognized as a Center of Excellence in Watershed Management by USEPA
